Coffee cup cozy

This little coffee sleeve is an ideal handmade gift when time is short. It’s compact, useful, and everyone appreciates a cozy cup of coffee—especially coworkers who carry their drinks to and from the office. The design shown here is St. Patrick’s Day themed, featuring a green clover appliqué, but the same steps work for any motif you prefer.

For this cozy you can use fabric scraps and a small piece of batting. The example pictured was quilted and finished with homemade bias binding to give a neat edge, but you can simplify the process by skipping the quilting and sewing the layers right sides together, then turning the piece out. Quilting adds texture and helps the cozy hold its shape, and because the project is small, taking the extra steps can be worth it.

DIY coffee cup sleeve

Materials:
- Coffee cup sleeve pattern (use your own or a simple template)
- Two rectangles of white fabric, each 12″ × 5″
- One rectangle of batting, 12″ × 5″
- A scrap of green polka-dot cotton (or any accent fabric for the clover)
- ⅛” width elastic, a short piece (about 2″)
- One medium button
- Green and white sewing thread
Directions:
1. Cut two sleeve pieces from the white fabric using your sleeve template.
2. Remove the clover shape from the template, trace it onto one of the white layers, and mark the shape clearly (chalk works well).

3. Place the green fabric behind the clover opening and pin it in place. Stitch around the traced clover line to secure the appliqué fabric.

4. Trim away the excess green fabric behind the clover and remove the small piece of white fabric inside the clover opening on the front layer so the green shows cleanly.

5. Use a narrow zigzag stitch to stitch around the clover edge. This secures the appliqué and prevents fraying while giving the clover a finished look.

6. Layer the pieces in a quilt sandwich: plain white layer on the bottom, batting in the middle, and the clover-adorned layer on top. Pin or baste the layers and quilt them as desired—straight-line quilting is quick and attractive.

7. Prepare bias binding (store-bought or homemade) and baste it around the cozy’s outer edge by hand before topstitching it in place with the machine. Miter the corners for a tidy finish and close the binding ends neatly on one side.

8. Cut a 2″ piece of ⅛” elastic and sew it to one side of the sleeve as the loop that will reach the button.

9. Wrap the sleeve around a cup to check fit, then mark and pin the spot where the button should sit so the elastic will loop comfortably over it.

10. Sew the button securely on the opposite side and trim any loose threads. Your coffee sleeve is complete and ready to use or gift.
That’s all there is to it—this quick sewing project is a great way to add personality to your daily cup and makes a lovely, handmade gift for friends and family during the St. Patrick’s celebrations.
