The sweaters might be delightfully tacky, but the food can be downright adorable. Here’s how to host an ugly sweater holiday party they’ll remember — with festive, easy-to-prepare food and simple tips for keeping the vibe cute and casual.

Ugly Sweaters, Super Cute Food

An ugly Christmas sweater party is one of the most fun and laid-back holiday traditions. It’s a chance to gather friends and family for laughter, colorful sweaters, and delicious seasonal food. If you’re hosting this year, these ideas will help you create a relaxed, festive gathering with food that’s as charming as the sweaters are silly.

I was thrilled to share some ugly sweater party inspiration in the 2023 holiday issue of Life’s a Party Magazine, and the concepts here are easy to adapt whether you’re planning a small get-together or a larger celebration.

Tips For Keeping It Cute and Casual

  • Keep stress low. The whole point of an ugly sweater party is playful simplicity — comfortable clothes, cheerful decor, and food that feels festive without being fussy.
  • Embrace the ridiculous. Ask guests to wear their most outrageous sweaters and remind them that anything goes. Ugly sweaters are an instant icebreaker and set the tone for a relaxed evening.
  • Make it easy to participate. Encourage guests to pick up or DIY a sweater rather than spending a lot of time on outfits. A last-minute accessory or a bit of glue-on trim can turn an ordinary jumper into something memorable.
  • Use inexpensive decor hacks. A roll of festive wrapping paper makes a quick and attractive table runner, and small touches like string lights or paper garlands add charm without a lot of effort. These little details elevate the table and keep the mood merry.

All About the Ugly Sweater Holiday Spread

Just because the sweaters are intentionally over-the-top doesn’t mean the food has to be. On the contrary: simple, thoughtfully styled dishes make the celebration feel special. A few themed boards and playful bites transform ordinary party fare into a festive experience.

What makes this spread work is presentation and variety. Offer a mix of savory and sweet, cold and warm, crunchy and soft. When foods are arranged with care — on boards, platters, or a wreath-shaped centerpiece — guests naturally gravitate toward the display and enjoy grazing all evening.

Ugly Sweater Charcuterie Board

No ugly sweater party is complete without a charcuterie board that’s as bold as the outfits. Build a board with a selection of cheeses, cured meats, crunchy crackers, nuts, and seasonal fruit. Add pickles, olives, and a few spreads to round it out. Arrange items so they form playful shapes or color blocks to echo the sweater theme — the result is both inviting and delicious.

Festive Antipasto Wreath

The Festive Antipasto Wreath makes a dramatic, edible centerpiece. Thread skewers with marinated vegetables, cheeses, cured meats, and olives, then arrange them in a circular wreath pattern on a platter. This display is easy to nibble from and brings a beautiful, savory counterpoint to sweeter boards on the table.

Santa Sweets Board

Bring a little holiday magic with a Santa Sweets Board: a dessert spread arranged with frosting, fresh fruit, cookies, and small confections. Use red and white elements and a few themed decorations to suggest Santa’s hat and beard. This board adds color and delight, and it’s always a favorite for kids and adults alike.

Christmas Tree Cookie Board

For a cheerful finishing touch, arrange an assortment of cookies in a tree shape on a long board or platter. Combine store-bought favorites with a few homemade cookies for a mix of textures and flavors. Add a frosted star cookie at the top and scatter a few candies or sprinkles to complete the look — simple, festive, and crowd-pleasing.
